Sustainable September - The Albany Studio: Crafting a Sustainable Future Through Upcycling

Next up in our Sustainable September campaign is The Albany Studio, covering what they do and how they promote sustainability.  As a business deeply rooted in eco-friendly practices, The Albany Studio is an inspiring example of how creativity and sustainability can work hand-in-hand to reduce waste and make a positive environmental impact.

The Albany Studio is a small local business with sustainability as its core ethos. Established in September 2022, The Albany Studio was born out of frustration with our throw away society. Our main focus is on upcycling furniture and promoting the re-use of quality items to create beauty in our homes. Striving to reuse and recycle items wherever possible, upcycling furniture has many positive benefits for the environment, but our main drive is to reduce the amount of furniture going to landfill. Repurposing old furniture reduces the impact on the environment by removing the demand for raw materials and energy.

All the furniture we upcycle is sourced locally so has a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to new furniture which has most likely been shipped to the Island. We have taken great care to source sustainable and environmentally friendly products to upcycle our pieces. Our furniture is a perfect fusion of art, functionality and sustainability, and we provide our clients with pieces that are both bespoke and a celebration of old-school craftsmanship.

We are also passionate about making upcycling accessible, so we run regular workshops that teach others how to paint their own furniture using a variety of different techniques. As well as encouraging sustainability, our workshops also foster creativity which is great for mindfulness, so engaging in upcycling also enhances our sense of well-being.

We are active across social media platforms and regularly post pictures of our work, and those of our students, with the aim of inspiring others to upcycle their own furniture, or to suggest that they commission us to do it for them.  

In the last two years we have saved hundreds of pieces from landfill and aim to grow that to thousands in the coming years.
